Every Integration Is a Future Outage

Modern business software promises to integrate with everything. Accounting systems connect to online stores. Payment platforms connect to inventory systems. Customer databases synchronize with marketing tools. At first, every new integration appears to make the business more efficient.

Each integration also creates a new dependency.

Whenever one system changes, every connected system must continue working exactly as expected. An API changes, a supplier discontinues a service, a subscription expires, or an update introduces an unexpected incompatibility. A feature that once saved a few minutes each day can suddenly prevent the business from operating at all.

This does not mean integrations should be avoided. It means they should be chosen carefully. Every connection should solve a real business problem and provide more value than the additional complexity it introduces.

Simple, well-defined interfaces are far more resilient than tightly coupled systems that depend on dozens of continuous interactions. The fewer moving parts a business relies on, the fewer opportunities exist for unexpected failures.

Artificial intelligence makes this principle even more important. As businesses increasingly build small tools tailored to their own workflows, it becomes easier to replace unnecessary integrations with focused solutions that exchange data through open, well-documented formats.

Good engineering is not measured by how many systems communicate with each other. It is measured by how little breaks when one of them changes.

Every integration should be viewed as a long-term commitment. Make sure it is worth maintaining for years, not just convenient today.
