Many small businesses believe that installing a VPN automatically makes their network secure. It does not. A VPN is simply a secure tunnel between two locations. Like any tunnel, it matters just as much what is connected at each end.
VPNs solve a specific problem. They allow employees to securely access office resources from another location and connect separate offices over the public internet. When used for these purposes, they are an excellent tool.
Problems begin when VPNs are treated as a universal security solution. A compromised laptop connected through a VPN is still a compromised laptop. Weak passwords remain weak passwords. Stolen credentials remain stolen credentials. A VPN cannot compensate for poor security practices elsewhere in the organization.
It is also important to understand what a VPN does not do. A VPN encrypts traffic while it travels across the internet, but a VPN does not prevent lawful surveillance at the endpoint. Data may still be accessible where it is ultimately stored or processed. Depending on the jurisdiction, service providers can be subject to lawful disclosure requests. Like any organization, they may also face insider threats or security breaches. Encryption reduces risk during transmission. It does not eliminate the need to trust the organizations handling your data.
Small businesses should also question whether they need a VPN at all. Many modern business applications already communicate using strong encryption and are designed to be accessed securely over the web. Introducing a VPN where none is required can increase operational complexity without providing meaningful additional protection.
When a VPN is necessary, keep it simple. Grant access only to the systems employees actually need. Protect accounts with multi-factor authentication. Keep VPN software and gateways updated. Whenever practical, keep sensitive business data on infrastructure you own and control instead of assuming that encrypted transport alone provides complete confidentiality.
The purpose of a VPN is not to make a business secure. Its purpose is to securely connect systems that already follow good security practices.
A VPN is a valuable tool. It should never be mistaken for the entire toolbox.
