Don't Trust the Green Checkmark

A green checkmark creates a powerful illusion. It tells us that everything is working, everything is secure, and everything is under control. But computers do not understand your business. They only report what they have been instructed to measure.

A backup application may report a successful backup even though the data cannot be restored. A monitoring platform may show that every server is online while customers are unable to place orders. An antivirus program may confirm that its signatures are up to date while an attacker is already operating with stolen credentials.

The real question is not whether the indicator is green.

The real question is whether the outcome that matters has actually been achieved.

History has demonstrated this repeatedly. During the Stuxnet attack, industrial control systems continued to present operators with normal readings while the malware secretly manipulated centrifuge speeds. The operators saw healthy systems. The physical equipment was quietly destroying itself.

Many operational and security failures happen because organizations confuse successful processes with successful results. A completed task is not proof that the objective has been met. A successful security scan is not proof that the environment is secure. A healthy status page is not proof that the business can continue operating.

Good engineering focuses on verification, not assumptions. Restore backups instead of trusting backup logs. Run disaster recovery exercises instead of relying on written procedures. Verify that employees can perform critical business functions instead of assuming that healthy infrastructure means healthy operations.

Dashboards, certificates, alerts, and status indicators are valuable. They provide evidence that a specific test succeeded under specific conditions. They do not prove that your business is resilient.

A green checkmark is evidence that a test passed.

It is not evidence that the outcome you care about is guaranteed.
